Connor Saxton: After reviewing several different language schools and teachers in Cartagena I took Spanish lessons at Babel. The partnership with the dance school brought great value to the package. The teachers there were good quality. I had lessons with Tania and got to know Esmeralda too. Overall it was an enriching experience for me and a great way to get amongst the scene in the city.
Paul Akers: I spent two months at Esmeralda‘s language school and I loved every second of it excellent excellent instruction very reasonable and best of all I took dance lessons almost every day and I improve my Spanish and my dancing skills. What an amazing experience all in one place

I had the chance to meet the owner Esmeralda who takes us to different great experiences there in Cartagena. We have been diving in the islands, eating in great local restaurants, surfing in the best spots, dancing Salsa in the best salsa school of Cartagena "crazy salsa" which is also her school. Everything was perfect. On the top of that, I had the chance to make a lot of friends that were having classes in Babel.. I had booked one month of class and 3 weeks on this total was private class. Definitely the best service in town. The whole building has just been renovated, classes are clean and teachers amazing, they take all the time you need to go into details... They generally propose their help for everything you need and local homestay to even more practice your Spanish. I don't know what else to say except that this school is the perfect starting point to deeply discover this incredible city that Cartagena is. Long life to the best spanish school of Cartagena!

Corina Fust: I highly recommend Babel school. I enjoyed going to class, our needs were met, I learned a lot in a short time and had a lot of fun. The school is located in the centre. Furthermore, the teachers are super nice and helpful. GO FOR IT! :-)
Max Olsen: I had an amazing time at Babel. It didn’t feel like an obligation to go to school, rather I looked forward to it. My teacher Tania taught me grammar and vocabulary but we also just had random conversations in Spanish as well. I made friends with my classmates and went out with them after class nearly every day. I made connections that will last me for a lifetime.
Nick D'Urso (dursonj): I met the owner Esmeralda through a friend of mine and took classes with Tania for a week. The classes were amazing and really helped me out with the functions of Spanish I had forgotten from when I was a kid in school. I took a placement test to see where I would be placed and I felt great with what I was learning for the week. When I go back I will definitely take more classes! I would highly recommend this school for anyone spending time in Cartagena. It's in a perfect location and an awesome place to learn. The teachers and everyone are just fantastic. I really mean it.
Elin Olsen-Nalum: I was in Cartagena two weeks in november/desember and wanted to do an intensive Spanish course. The Babel school had not so many students and none on my level so I received private lessons. Perfect! God, patient teachers and other staff and laidback atmosphere. The school is located right outside the old town. Free group dance class for all the students enrolled in a course. It’s recommended!
lorenz maurer: I spent there 3 weeks and I had a great time! The school is located in the historic center (8 min walk from getsemaní). The classes were small so the teacher could respond to individual needs. In general everyone was very friendly and helpful.Another plus: free salsa lessons are included too.Definitely recommendable!
Anina Hofer: Was a good experience and especially I recommend the private lessons, because there you talk more about everyday life, the lessons in the morning are more theoretical. Furthermore the school is very central located!

Dwayne Gayle: I started working with Carlos right at the beginning of the pandemic, I figured this is a great time to do something I’ve always wanted to do. Learn Spanish!!carlos created a plan and we got to work, for over a year I worked with him, even weekends. I still have work to do, but I can say I’m at B1 fluency now and I feel confident speaking to native speakers, I do make errors, but I’m rarely lost in conversations I’m planning a trip to Spain, and I feel I’ll be able to around easily and that was the whole idea.
Griff Stone: I was extremely fortunate to study Spanish under Carlos, the Director of Aqua Spanish Language School. His progressive Spanish language methodology taught me, and had me speaking more Spanish in three months, than I learned I learned in four years of high school, three years of college, and several months of Spanish job training….I feel a huge debt to Carlos and his school!Most importantly, I have noticed there was an extremely tedious structure to learning a foreign language in the past whereupon instructors took their students through a “checklist”. The student had to try to remember endless and useless lists of vocabulary, verbs, etc. Carlos and his staff figured out that there are WAY more frequently used patterns and words of a language, instead of ridiculous “lists of eating utensils, lists of parts of cars, lists of animals, etc” (the traditional way) that I will never remember. That was the way I was taught for years — until meeting Carlos!
Josh Butler: There are some really good teachers at this school. After trying other schools I ended up with Carlos for private lessons and never went anywhere else after. He's good at understanding your level and where you need to improve so the classes are well tailored. I recommend 100%

The lessons were engaging, useful, and the teachers are very patient with me. They are always encouraging me to try and not to be afraid to make mistakes. Daniel Walton: Carlos is an absolute legend. I loved having him for a Spanish teacher, and I loved how he worked with my style of learning and forced me to think for myself about what I was saying and how that didn't make sense rather than just telling me that what I was saying was wrong; I was forced to try and understand his 'confusion' (in Spanish) and formulate a response that better articulated what I wanted to say. Of course, if ever I got too lost, I could always tap out and get the help I needed in English, but not without some solid encouragement.I hope to utilise Carlos' services again in the future!¡Gracias por todo tu formación Carlos!

Gary Gausman: I have been taking Spanish lessons online from Cata for over 6 months. She is extremely capable and very pleasant to deal with. She gives good homework lessons and very thoroughly goes over them with me. She has really helped me in learning various tenses (past, present, and future….and we’re now working on positive imperative). I really like that she corrects, in a very gentle manner, me when I say something incorrectly. I look forward to continuing to work with her in the future!

Isadora Carvalho Grion: Minha experiência na escola Nueva Lengua foi muito positiva tanto na educação do espanhol, com os professores Carolina e Kevin, que explicaram muito bem e que foi boa e me fez avançar no idioma, quanto nas atividades extracurriculares que foram incríveis e muito divertidas e tanto no aspecto social, já que há muitas pessoas de todos os países muito amáveis. Recomendaria essa experiência para qualquer um, ainda mais na Colômbia que é um país lindo.
Denise Leal: Estudei por três semana na Nueva Lengua e eu não poderia ter feito melhor escolha. Os professores são super bem preparados e as aulas muito dinâmicas.Escolhi a hospedagem na própria escola e os quartos são simples, porém muito limpos. Ponto alto dessa experiência foi o café da manhã preparado com muito carinho pelas cozinheiras da escola: Yenis e Marcela! 3A estrutura da escola é pequena mas super bem conservada, e comporta super bem o número de alunos. Destaque para o terraço que pode ser utilizado e que tem uma vista muito legal da cidade.Eu voltaria mil vezes!

Escola bem organizada, com professores muito bons, as turmas possuem no máximo 3 a 5 alunos o que faz que você esteja bem exposto a fala, temos aula de conversação e gramática . Todos os dias tem programação de passeios ou eventos organizados pela escola para que as turmas possam interagir e até mesmo experimentar outras formas de aprendizado ! They made learning so much fun that we looked forward to attending classes each day.On top of that, the weekly activities organized by the school were incredibly fun and entertaining; I always looked forward to them and especially loved how they put up a clear schedule on the wall to inform us about them. I also had the opportunity to meet such wonderful people from all around the world that I still keep in contact with. La comunicación con la oficina fue fluida y las actividades después de la escuela son divertidas y una excelente manera de practicar tu español. Nuestras maestras (Mayra y Carolina) fueron realmente profesionales y se puede ver que tienen pasión por la enseñanza y el idioma español. Elias: Tiden min på Nueva Lengua i Cartagena var et minne for livet. Skolen har en fantastisk lokasjon i hjertet av Cartagena. Jeg var der i 10 dager og ble utrolig godt motatt. Jeg hadde Carolina som lærer og WOW, for en evne til å lære bort. Vi avsluttet alltid med 1 time med fokus på kommunikasjon, hvor Kevin var helt strålende. Aktivitetene etter skolen var også veldig gøy, fordi du utforsket byen på måter du elles aldri ville gjort. Jeg kan virkelig anbefale denne skolen til andre reisende.
ian paul: The school is a great place to enrol. The teachers are helpful, friendly and assist you regardless of what level of Spanish you have. It’s a great place to mix with like minded travellers so it doesn’t matter if you enrol by yourself or with a travelling buddy as there are daily activities for you to interact with fellow travellers if you choose to. I was fortunate to have Kevin, Mayra, Carolina and Paola as my main teachers but also had the pleasure of having Eli the dance teacher who is packed full of energy to help me going from having 2 left feet to pulling of salsa, merengue and bachata dance routines. I’m happy to have spent my time here.

Niko Schmuck: Una semana en esta escuela fue una experiencia maravillosa para mí. Buenos maestros que hicieron tiempo para mí fuera de clase, durante los descansos, durante el almuerzo e incluso después de la escuela. Muchas gracias a María, Luz y Manuel por las interesantes discusiones y su paciencia. A principios de diciembre había pocos alumnos en la escuela, así que prácticamente estaba dando clases particulares. Pero también el recorrido en bicicleta, el paseo por el casco antiguo de Cartagena y el concierto de bossa nova fueron una buena oportunidad para aprender más sobre la ciudad y la vida aquí. Getsemaní, un distrito donde se encuentra la escuela, es muy animado y ofrece mucho para disfrutar de la vida caribeña con sus casas coloridas, cafés y pequeñas tiendas.

CTG está a solo 1,5 horas de vuelo desde BOG.María de SWI en Bogotá es tu contacto principal para todo lo relacionado con tus vacaciones lingüísticas. Ella organiza todo de acuerdo a sus deseos. En Cartagena, por otro lado, la muy útil Nahomy es su persona de contacto.Solo puedo recomendar encarecidamente esta escuela de idiomas, el ambiente en esta ciudad es único, ¡un escenario perfecto para aprender español y practicarlo en el acto!

Selina Wiggins: Disfruté estudiando allí y aprendí mucho. Además, las actividades fuera del aula fueron muy agradables. Los profesores son amables y Ana, que fue mi profesora, hizo un gran trabajo. Un aspecto negativo, en mi opinión, es que no obtienes un guión con las reglas, la gramática, etc., sino solo hojas sueltas sobre el tema que se discute en clase.

Laurin Rienhardt: Pasé 6 semanas en el Instituto Mundial de Español para realmente hablar español con fluidez y estoy más que feliz con mi tiempo aquí. Desde el principio los profesores me cuidaron muy bien y adaptaron las clases a mi nivel. Además, sin haberlo reservado, tuve clases individuales todo el tiempo, lo que realmente me ayudó mucho con mi progreso personal. Siempre podía hacer preguntas y obtenía respuestas útiles. Todo el mundo es extremadamente amable y también todos los profesores hablan bien inglés, por lo que no es un problema, si tu español es un poco escaso al principio. La ubicación es excelente, Cartagena es una ciudad hermosa para pasar el tiempo y los maestros seguramente te darán recomendaciones sobre qué hacer e incluso organizarán cosas para ti. Muy contento de haber estado aquí.

Alec Altonen: I went to Spanish World Institute for one week. The professors are awesome and interactive. Come into this school at any spanish experience level. The school is easy to find and in a great location in town. Defintely worth it.
Ingebjørg Rygnestad: I studied at SWI in Cartagena for 3months in 2017, and after the first two weeks I noticed that things weren't exactly clean or the way it was supposed to be. A rude and exploiting manager is to blame for this. My main teacher was excellent in her job and the reason why I learned Spanish so good, but if the manager was to decide I would most likely have failed my exam in the end. The manager refused me to switch teacher, she put me in a lower level group of student to save money, even though there were teachers available. She was the one deciding my curriculum even though my teacher, who in fact is educated in the field and she not, wanted to do it otherwise which slowed down my progress. These are factors which has influenced my classes, but why I really can not recommend this place is because I know how she treats her staff. They get almost daily treatenings that if they don't do this and that they will be fired, she holds back the monthly payment and also forces her staff to pay for the extra expenses for the air-condition (which was higher due to a higher number of students). I have many more examples just as ridiculous as this one. And when 4 out of 6 staffmembers have been fired since I was there, it should go off some alarm bells when you choose your school. PS: Just a last funny story. The manager refused me to have classes with one of my teachers because she though that I would end up pregnant...what more can I say? Best wishes for my X-teachers
Christian Wörz: I studied here for almost 3 weeks and could really improve my Spanish! I was the only student in my group so I had like private classes with Victoria. The classes were really fun and well structured. It was a well balanced mix between grammar, exercises and conversation including some listening comprehension. Thank you very much Victoria! I did not give 5 stars because I would have preferred to meet more students there and to have more activities (like every afternoon). I think the school needs to invest more money in online marketing to attract more younger students from abroad. Besides the school is very beautiful and perfectly located in Getsemani!
Katie Johnson: I took a week of intensive classes before traveling across South America for the summer. It was a good way to get to know the language and to be able to practice speaking and listening. I thought the lessons were well rounded. I learned about grammar but was still about to practice speaking and listening and learn about Colombian culture. I was the only student in my class so I was able to receive extra attention. I would recommend SWI to anyone visiting Cartagena.

Stewart Martin: I think that SWI is one of the better schools in Cartagena. They generally have small class sizes (I was 1 on 1) which means that there is more attention for each student. I went to the school in Bogotá at the start of my time in Colombia and was able to continue from the same ciriculum when I arrived later in Cartagena. Having a school in both of these places is ideal for travellers looking to improve their spanish as they travel.

Alison Cortes: I took classes at Spanish World Institute in Cartagena for two weeks after taking classes at another school in El Centro. I preferred Spanish World Institute because I received personal attention and care from the teachers and administrators and felt like I was part of a family. The classes were very comprehensive and the focus was on what I wanted to work on, as opposed to a strict curriculum. The teachers took us on several excursions around the city and also arranged a Salsa class for all of the students, after which I ended up taking private lessons with the teacher at the school. The school is located in a beautiful part of Getsemani, close to Plaza de Trinidad. I recommend Spanish World Institute to anyone who is considering taking Spanish classes in Cartagena.

Thomas Wojkowski: Schule mit Hauptsitz in Bogota und seit etwa einem Jahr auch mit Standort in Cartagena fuer diejenigen die es waermer und touristischer moegen. Die Schule liegt in der wunderschoenen Altstadt von Cartagena umgeben von netten Lokalen und hat sich mittlerweile gut etabliert. Fuer Interessenten des Bidlungsurlaubs sehr gut geeingnet, da es sehr indivduell gestalltet wird mit Moeglichkeiten den Unterricht mit vielen Interessen und Aktivitaeten zu fuellen (z.B. Vokabeln lernen am Strand) Ich haette mir einzig und allein ein wenig mehr Unterrichtsmaterial gewuenscht um etwas mehr Strukur aufzubauen.Fazit: Der Standort ist ein Taum. Sehr farbenfroh und mit karibischen Einfluss. Gutes Preis- leistungsverhaeltnis (guenstigste die ich auf der Suche weltweit gefunden habe). Man lernt mit Spass!

Princess Walsh: I was in Cartagena for about a year and wouldn't have been there that long if it weren't for Gustavo. He was, and is, an amazing teacher! He made sure that I applied what I learned in his classroom to the energetic streets of Cartagena. My comprehension of the Spanish language really grew just after a few classes. He has an in depth understanding of teaching and adult learning principles. My struggle was tenses and conjugation, as well as learning common words/phrases- I took Spanish in high school, but we all know how that goes lol. Gustavo gave me the confidence and literal words to help me improve my Spanish and enjoy my experience in Cartagena. I had a great time connecting with his other students who were only there for short amounts of time and those who living there for a couple years on work contracts. So happy to have met him- I learned so much!!

I probably had good predispositions (knowing another Latin language) but here is what is excellent about Gustavo: he reads you and adapts his style, speed, and content to you! I had 4 hours of classes a day and Gustavo was very flexible in terms of schedule.I told him I was super serious about learning, wanted an intensive programme, and homework kept me busy every evening!Classes are focused on speaking whilst working on new vocabulary and grammar. The view from the classroom is breathtaking by the way - can be distracting at times ;)Gustavo is also simply a great soul and I was often invited to join him and his friends at dinners, drinks, etc: he really does care about his students and their experience in Cartagena and Colombia.I can only recommend Gustavo and Letra Caribe - I would not be at the Spanish level I am at today if it were not for him.100%!
LeeAnn Ungar: I took a month long trip to Colombia in December 2018 and decided for my first week that I would take Spanish lessons somewhere and i'm so glad that I chose Letra Caribe in Cartagena. Gustavo and his sister are fantastic teachers who plan lessons according to your skill level and they really boost your confidence level in speaking the language too. I was also lucky to be in a small group class with two other girls with a similar skill level as me. The classes don't feel like typical classes from a text book because you are speaking so much and talking about your own experiences (in Spanish!) that it just feels like you are having conversations with friends. I had basic travel knowledge of Spanish before I started classes and after one week I could confidently have full conversations with locals which added immensely to my trip as a whole. The value is excellent and I'm considering travelling back to Cartagena just for another week of lessons in the future. Cheers!
John Rothschild: This is my fifth time studying Spanish with Gustavo, of Letracaribe, doing “viviendo espanol” or living Spanish. This is a type of Spanish in which we explore the culture of Cartagena and meet all kinds of people while talking Spanish. Gustavo also speaks fluent English so he helps with any translation problems.We visited different barrios and explored life there. Also, we were able to experience some poets and culture in the making with visits to different institutions.At night, Gustavo and I met for dinner with his friends, many who also speak English. So in addition to Spanish during the day, I was able to have interesting contact with some of Gustavo's friends at night.I strongly recommend Gustavo if you are looking for a Spanish teacher. Even though I did “viviendo espanol”, Gustavo also teaches from a classroom. He is an extremely interesting and fun person to do Spanish with and if you are in Cartagena, there is no better person as your contact.

w koz: Letra Caribe is and amazing Spanish school I would recommend it to anyone who is considering Spanish lessons in Colombia.This is a small family run language school in a great location right next to colorful Calle 31 with good value restaurants and bars. Gustavo and his sisters are fantastic teachers, they adapt to your skill level and challenge you appropriately to get the best learning outcome. I had very limited time in Cartagena but wanted to squeeze in as much as possible so following a free assessment of my Spanish via Skype, Gustavo created a bespoke program of private lessons to work with the limited time I had. I would have 2 2-hour classroom sessions at a time followed by a 2-hour afternoon exploration lesson where the teacher would take me to a local market or a disadvantaged children foundation. This was really great as we practiced lots of conversation in Spanish whilst exploring Cartagena and the local culture at the same time. The school also arranged a home stay for me with a lovely family 20 minutes walk away so I was able to practice conversion with them as well outside of school. The costs of the lessons were really good value and it was easy to communicate with Gustavo via e-mail or Whatsapp ahead and during my stay in Cartagena.

Albin Eck: Gustavo is an incredible teacher capable to pinpoint your difficulties, give you guidance in understanding the mechanics behind them, therefore making you earn a considerable amount of autonomy along with a capacity to self-analyze. His knacks have nothing to do with any rigid grammar lesson you could have seen in academic books. If, as me, you started with books, you will realize how much his witty teaching can adds up to your game. I've been self-taught for years because this way always panned out for me, but Gustavo spirited method did make a considerable difference in a very limited time (2 classes/day during 1 week) and my level of proficiency undoubtedly notched up.Gustavo cunning abilities will drive you straight on the road to progress and self-confidence. He is passionate about his job and you will feel it every minute of your class with him. Natasha Khade: I recommend Letra Caribe 100% for anyone who wants to improve their Spanish regardless of what level they are at. I lived in Cartagena for three months, and when I first got there I did not speak a word of Spanish. I was on the lookout for a Spanish school, and Letra Caribe was highly recommended by a friend who was a local of the city. When I first spoke to Gustavo, he asked that I meet with me first so that he could get a sense of what I wanted to achieve through the Spanish classes. After understanding my reasons for wanting to learn the language, I began to take class with Gustavo for a month. He was able to understand my learning style and would design classes based on how I picked up the material. I cannot remember any class with him being boring. He came up with a number of different activities (e.g. movie night, games) so as to maximize my exposure to the language. Gustavo also connected me to a number of locals with whom I could practice my newly obtained language skills. Gustavo has a way of making his students feel comfortable with the material and provides them with a safe place to practice. Gustavo is a gifted teacher and I am very happy with my decision to study at Letra Caribe.
Daniel Malone: Studying Spanish with Gustavo at Letra Caribe as a complete beginner was genuinely one of the best decision I made - I was speaking from day 1. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to learn or develop their Spanish.I arrived in Cartagena knowing I wanted to spend the first 2 weeks learning spanish before travelling South America for 5 months, so I searched online, found some Spanish schools, and visited each the day arrived. The first two schools I visited I would describe as generic, both simply handed me a menu with prices, offering group classes and 121 tuition - neither spent any time to question or understand my requirements. Afterwards, I met with Gustavo at Letra Caribe, who invited me to his office and spent 20 minutes with me going through options, finding out more about me, and also offering suggestions for accommodation, homestay and Couchsurfing groups, even before I decided to study with him. This meeting made my decision to study with Gustavo easy: we agreed 4 hours per day 121, starting the next day, with 2 different teachers - 2 hours grammar & vocabulary and 2 hours speaking, with a much needed break in between - all for an extremely reasonable price. Gustavo’s focus on enabling me to communicate and express myself meant by the end of the first week I could speak with locals, sometimes in Spanglish, where I practiced my Spanish and they their English - it was an awesome experience. I also met other students of Gustavo, who had relocated to Cartagena, and noticed they could all speak fluently and with confidence which was great to see. I thought it was great how Gustavo developed strong relationships with his students and encouraged them to me each other in the evening for social activities too. In summary, you won’t regret studying spanish with Gustavo at Letra Caribe, he is a great guy, a patient but challenging teacher and now a good friend.

I'm able to have spontaneous conversations with locals about a host of topics, considering I only did four weeks of classes, starting from zero. I was worried that doing well in classes wouldn't carry over to the real world, but that has not been the case at all.The classes themselves were really enjoyable. My teachers were great, the other students were great. We cracked plenty of jokes while still learning new grammar and vocabulary.The school was very helpful when it came to logistics as well. I literally enrolled on a Friday afternoon for Monday morning classes. Also, the school allowed me to print documents and received a package for me.Cannot recommend this school highly enough.

I was nervous to speak with people in Spanish, but I gained a lot of confidence while I was there! The school organized a lot of fun activities that allowed you to experience more of the city. They also organized a trip to Isla Grande on the weekend, which was incredible! I stayed with an awesome host family very close to the school. I can't say enough good things!

The school is located in the historic center of Cartagena, with lots of restaurants, shops and sights in a short walking distance.Teachers and staff are just awesome and made my stay a unique and special experience. Everybody is super friendly and helpful.All in all a great experience, defenitely a school that I can recommend.
lisa muzzin: This is a great place to learn or improve your Spanish. Not only are the teachers and classes of top quality but there are free events most days as well. This helps you to get to know other students and the city and to practice your spanish even more. I really enjoyed my time here. Thanks everyone!

Loris Contro: I spent 6 FUNtastic weeks learning Spanish and everything I could about the Colombian heritage and culture at Centro Catalina, and would have spent a lot more than that if I had had more time. The teachers, facilities, customer service, extra activities and anybody who works in there with great passion: everything was excellent! I attended both schools in Medellin and Cartagena,and I strongly recommend them.

Thomas Augsten: School was great fun, wonderful staff, and evening as well as weekend activities are organized. Stayed for a 1-week elementary course and would come back. Also limited number of affordable rental rooms available in a safe neighborhood.

Danny Lee: Realmente puedo recomendar el centro catalina para todas las personas que quieran aprender español, ¡no importa el nivel que tengas! ¡Las instalaciones, el personal, los profesores y la forma en que enseñan son de primera! Todos los días tienen una actividad para la tarde y también para los fines de semana, como clase de salsa, cine, recorridos por la ciudad o graffiti, etc. Además, la escuela está en el centro del centeo histórico, por lo que puedes encontrar muchos restaurantes, bares y tiendas justo al lado! En este punto, quiero decir MUCHAS GRACIAS a todo el personal, especialmente a David, ¡que es un "papi" increíble! ¡¡Todos ustedes, sigan adelante como lo hacen!! Mucho gusto.. jackie! ;)
